Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination (AI) is a reproductive technique to achieve pregnancy without natural mating. It's commonly used in various animal species, including dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and more. This process involves the introduction of sperm into the female reproductive tract, bypassing the need for natural mating. At Pet Vet, we want to help you understand the benefits of using artificial insemination as a breeding technique here at our Steinbach, Manitoba location for canine reproduction.

Why Use Artificial Insemination?

There are several reasons to employ AI in canine reproduction.  They include accessing genetics from sires that are not local to Steinbach or even Manitoba, prevention of injury to the male or female dogs, reducing the risk of infectious disease transmission or simply helping reluctant or inexperienced dogs who are not successful at natural mating.

Considerations of Artificial Insemination

If AI is recommended by our veterinary team, we can take you through the steps required to maximize the chances of achieving pregnancy.  We require a physical examination to be performed on the bitch and the dog being used for side by side breeding, as well as progesterone testing to pinpoint ovulation.  If semen is being shipped from another location, an examination of the bitch prior to the insemination appointment is required.  Establishing the window of ovulation allows us to maximize our chances of success during the breeding and also allows for accurate timing of cesarean section if necessary or desired.  Our veterinarians reserve the right to decline to breed dogs who have deleterious physical or behavioral characteristics.   Artificial insemination technique can vary between reproductive cases. If you consider artificial insemination for your dog, it's important to consult with our veterinarian, who can provide guidance and expertise tailored to your situation.

Artificial insemination requires specialized equipment and training.

Success depends on various factors, including semen quality, insemination timing, and female reproductive health.

Progesterone testing and health evaluation of the participants is mandatory at Pet Vet.

This process is commonly used in various animal breeding programs, including livestock production, preservation of endangered species, and improvement of specific traits in companion animals.

We do not guarantee the success of any artificial insemination.
