Orthopedics

Orthopedic problems can occur in both young and older pets. These problems can affect mobility and can be the source of chronic pain. Fortunately, veterinarians have developed several treatments and procedures to help animals with orthopedic issues. At Pet Vet in Steinbach, Manitoba Canada, we can provide successful treatment of your pet’s orthopedic problem.

Common Orthopedic Problems in Pets

Veterinarians often have to repair complex fractures of the bone that animals experience from accidents. This sometimes requires the insertion of pins or plates to stabilize the bone. A luxating patella, in which the kneecap slips out of position, is another common problem that causes pain and limping. Cruciate ligament tears can occur in dogs that require surgery to repair and stabilize. Arthritis is a common problem in older animals that may require treatment to ensure normal mobility. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are other problems that are commonly found in pets.

Symptoms of Orthopedic Issues

In some cases, an orthopedic problem is obvious, such as with a complex fracture of the bone that is visibly broken. The bone may be exposed, and the animal may be in obvious pain. However, other conditions can be subtler. You may notice limping, or the animal not using the limb at all. The animal may groan when getting up from a lying down position or may yelp in discomfort when using the leg.

Diagnosis of Pet Orthopedic Problems

Your vet will physically examine the animal and may order x-rays or ultrasounds to “see” the conditions of the bones and joints inside the body. In some cases, other tests may be done to pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Treatments For Orthopedic Issues

Orthopedic problems can vary in severity. Some animals can benefit from conservative treatment that includes medications and physical therapy. Surgery is sometimes required to restore normal function and provide relief from pain. After surgery, physical therapy is sometimes prescribed to aid healing and hasten the return to full mobility.
