At Pet Vet, we understand how much you love your dog. Now that the surgery is over, it's time to focus on their recovery. Many people feel a little worried and wonder how to ensure a speedy recovery for their furry companion. Don't worry; we've got you covered! Below, you'll find the best tips for caring for your dog after surgery. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact our veterinarian in Steinbach.
Following post-operative care instructions is crucial. Here are some helpful tips that most veterinarians near you would recommend:
Feeding — General anesthesia can make your dog queasy and cause them to lose their appetite. For post-op feeding, opt for a light meal consisting of chicken and rice, as it's often easier for them to digest than regular dog food. Your pup's appetite should return to normal within 24 hours. However, if it doesn't within 48 hours, please contact your veterinarian in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada.
Pain Management — Your vet will discuss pain management following your pet's surgery, which may include prescribed medication. They'll provide instructions on the required dosage, frequency, and how to administer it. Following their guidance is vital to prevent unnecessary pain during your pet's recovery.
Restricting Movement — Regardless of the type of surgery, the veterinarian will likely limit your pet's movement and activities for a specified period after the surgery to avoid interfering with the stitching and healing process.
Keeping Them Comfortable — Ensure your dog has a comfortable and quiet place to rest away from your family and other pets. A larger bed is better to prevent the incision from pulling.
Caring for the Incision Site — The most challenging part is preventing your dog from scratching, biting, or chewing their incision site or bandage. You can avoid these issues by using a plastic cone-shaped collar. Don't hesitate to speak with your vet about your options.
Lastly, don't forget to attend your follow-up appointment! Your veterinarian needs to monitor the recovery and healing progress, checking for any signs of infection before it becomes serious. You also want to ensure that the bandages aren't on for too long.
